Some school districts in California have developed a district strategic plan that identifies district goals, lays out strategies to achieve these goals and ultimately drives district budgeting and decision-making. These plans cover a period of about five years and are approved by the district board of education.
While it is currently uncommon for district strategic plans to address active transportation, there is potential to include goals and strategies related to school travel. The goals identified in a district strategic plan can be carried out through accompanying documents, such as a climate action plan and/or school travel plan.
The district strategic plan is yet another document that schools can use to promote safe routes to school, travel demand management or other similar programs.
