Subject: Helpful Hints
Thank you for these. Hopefully, someone will find the following hints helpful.
This collection relies on Adobe AIR to deliver the content. Adobe AIR is no longer supported and the software will not install on Windows 10 or above. Earlier versions of Windows also report failures to install or unacceptable performance issues after installation, so there is little point in installing it on an earlier OS.
The default content itself consists of CNG files. These are encrypted versions of the original JPG files, as scanned by NatGeo. Others have written small scripts to convert the CNG back to JPG. Each issue will have a directory filled with images for each page of that issue.
I used the cng2jpg software. You must first mount each disc, then copy the contents to your drive, because cng2jpg puts the JPG in the same directory as the original CNG. Conversion took a day on a slow computer.
A quick search and sort by file extension lets you delete the CNG files after the conversion.
An alternate approach is to convert the directories themselves to CBZ files, an extension typically associated with comic book archives. These are the directories (post-conversion to JPG) zipped into a single archive and the extension changed from ZIP to CBZ. There are many free CBZ viewers. This software appears to do this conversion, although I did not use it.
IMPORTANT. The original source scans done by NatGeo appear to be 200dpi. Customers complained when it was released, as you will when you see the low-resolution images. There is no way to improve the quality of the images in this collection. To be clear, the fault for this really does appear to be with NatGeo, not the conversion from CNG to JPG.
Further information about this process:
Quality issues aside, the articles are wonderful, the collection is complete, and we are lucky to have access to this amazing publication.

Subject: Quite the find
Came across this hoping any version was on here to compare to my own copy, only to find out this is entirely identical to mine, with the exception of the 7th disc that not only adds 12 new issues, but also updates the software, which is quite an incredible thing to find out
